The island

So having all ready spent 6 weeks on the island you might think that I had seen it all or was perhaps bored of it. You would be wrong! I enjoy a walk in the morning around the island and if the weather isn't too great (a sting wind) or as now is the case rain I head to North pond. Generally there are new birds regularly visiting Skokholm so something different to see.

However, a site that really caught our attention the other day was a rabbit charging and head butting a great black backed gull! The gull was so shocked to think that it was considering eating this lovely rabbit that it flew off to find breakfast elsewhere!

The puffins are still causing constant amusement for guests and myself with some fighting, others gathering nesting material, billing, crash landings and rolling down the hills. They really are great little birds. The hot spot for the puffins is at crab bay and over the last few days there hasn't been a spare seat at the hide! As there is only room for three people a bamboo stick is used to represent available seats at the the top of the hill. When you go down to the hide you take a stick out and leave it on the ground so people know if there is any room.

However, we still haven't reached full puffin count with numbers still fluctuating just above and just below 1000 around the neck.

The most recent and current news is the hatching of great black backed gulls. The chicks are a light fluffy grey with black spots. It looks like someone has splashed ink all over them. Cute things....for now.
